The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has denied any involvement in alleged extortion activities being carried out by some officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Oyo town.

A statement released by the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin on Sunday clarified that the monarch neither authorised nor sanctioned any form of extortion by security operatives under the pretext of enforcing security directives.

The palace said its attention was drawn to reports that certain police officers were extorting money from unsuspecting residents while falsely claiming to be acting on the orders of the Alaafin.

Describing the claims as false and unfounded, the palace urged the public to disregard such misinformation.

“His Imperial Majesty did not authorise anyone—whether individual, group, or security personnel—to harass or extort the peace-loving people of Oyo,” the statement read.

The Alaafin also urged residents to stay vigilant and take precautionary measures when dealing with law enforcement officers. He advised the public to always verify officers’ identities by checking name tags and service numbers and to report any suspicious conduct to the Oyo Area Police Command or the nearest police station.

He further encouraged residents to document any unlawful incidents and ensure that such reports reach the appropriate authorities for immediate disciplinary action.

Reaffirming his commitment to peace and public safety, the monarch assured citizens that his reign remains devoted to protecting lives, property, and the overall well-being of Oyo town.
