The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade I, was on Friday received with pomp and grandeur in Benin City, Edo State, during a royal visit to honour the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, who marked his 91st birthday.
The visit, according to a statement by Bode Durojaiye, Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, was at the special invitation of Chief Igbinedion, who requested the monarch to serve as the Royal Father of the Day at his birthday celebration. The event attracted traditional rulers, dignitaries, and guests from across Nigeria and beyond.
Oba Owoade, accompanied by his royal entourage, was warmly received on arrival in Benin. Residents lined the streets in their thousands, waving and cheering as the Alaafin’s convoy drove through the city to the celebration venue. The civic reception reflected the respect and admiration accorded to the monarch by the people.

The ceremony itself was marked by cultural displays, music, and fanfare.
Chief Igbinedion, who was born on September 11, 1934, is widely celebrated as a businessman, philanthropist, and educationist. He is the founder of Igbinedion University, Nigeria’s first private university, as well as television and radio stations. His vast investments include banking, oil refining, and mining interests across Africa, making him one of Nigeria’s most influential figures.
In his goodwill message, Chief Igbinedion described the Alaafin as “the foremost traditional ruler in Yorubaland,” whose humility and leadership have elevated the monarchy. He praised Oba Owoade’s generosity and commitment to the welfare of his people, noting that his influence has fostered peace and unity within Yorubaland.
Responding, the Alaafin stressed the importance of national unity and peaceful coexistence. He noted that Nigeria’s diversity should be a source of strength rather than division, and called for the adoption of traditional methods of conflict resolution to complement the modern judiciary. According to him, such approaches could greatly enhance the country’s justice system and promote harmony.
The Alaafin also commended Chief Igbinedion for his lifelong contributions to education, philanthropy, and business development. He pledged continued friendship and collaboration between their institutions, affirming that unity, mutual respect, and cultural values are vital for Nigeria’s progress in these challenging times.
