Alaafin of Oyo marks 50th birthday with gratitude, reflection

By Adejayan Gbenga –
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, celebrated his 50th birthday on Thursday with deep gratitude, personal reflection, and a royal sense of purpose.
In a statement commemorating the occasion, Oba Owoade described his life as a journey rooted in divine purpose, cultural heritage, and dedicated service to his people.
“Today, I turn 50. Five decades of divine purpose — a journey of crown, culture, and calling. I give glory to God and honor to my ancestors,” he said.
He also prayed for continued wisdom, strength, and peace in the years ahead, while reaffirming his commitment to leadership and the preservation of tradition.
The golden jubilee celebration, tagged #AlaafinAt50, has drawn goodwill messages from across Nigeria and beyond — including traditional rulers, political figures, cultural groups, and members of the Yoruba diaspora.
Oba Owoade ascended the throne following the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, carrying forward the legacy of one of the most respected and ancient monarchies in Yoruba history.
Earlier in the week, the Alaafin also marked 19 years of marriage with his wife, Olori Abiwumi Owoade, whom he described as his “strength, peace, and forever.”
Festivities in Oyo and surrounding communities are expected to continue in honour of the monarch’s personal and royal milestone.
