ALGON Kaduna dismisses El-Rufai’s allegations against Governor Uba Sani

By Kunle Sanni

The Kaduna State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has refuted allegations by former Governor Nasir el-Rufai that Governor Uba Sani is siphoning local government funds and acquiring properties abroad.

Speaking at a press conference in Kaduna, the local government chairmen described el-Rufai’s claims as “false, absurd, and ill-intentioned,” accusing him of attempting to mislead the public and undermine the state government.

ALGON emphasized that Governor Sani’s administration upholds transparency, accountability, and the financial autonomy of local governments. The association stated that the current administration has not interfered with local government funds but has instead implemented projects that support grassroots development.

Some chairmen who served under el-Rufai’s tenure compared both administrations, stating that local governments now receive more than double the monthly allocations they did under the former governor. They also alleged that el-Rufai’s tenure was marked by intimidation and high-handedness.

The group further criticized el-Rufai for introducing a controversial “Riot Damage Deductions” policy, which they claimed unfairly targeted local governments in Southern Kaduna. They accused the former governor of deepening ethnic tensions through what they described as “collective punishment” for communities that did not support his administration. They credited Governor Sani with reversing the policy, which they say has restored peace and stability.

Highlighting the current administration’s efforts, ALGON commended Governor Sani’s Rural Transformation Programme, which it said has improved infrastructure, revived rural agriculture, and created jobs in local communities.

The association expressed confidence in the governor’s leadership, stating that local government chairmen are now able to focus on governance without interference.

ALGON urged the public to dismiss el-Rufai’s allegations, calling them baseless and lacking factual evidence. The association insisted that the government remains committed to serving the people of Kaduna State.
