Alimosho LG Vice Chairman takes over, following principal’s suspension

Vice Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Akinpelu Johnson, has officially received his appointment letter to assume office as Acting Chairman, following the indefinite suspension of the council’s former Chairman, Jelili Sulaimon.

The letter, dated October 8, 2024, was signed by Kikelomo Bolarinwa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development.

The letter, titled ‘Re: Suspension of Mr. Sulaimon Jelili, Chairman, Alimosho Local Government Area Resolution of the House,’ referred to the Lagos State House of Assembly’s resolution that suspended Sulaimon based on various allegations.

The letter outlined that the suspension was in accordance with Section 24 of the Local Government Administration Law (Amendment) Law, 2016.

In light of this, Johnson was directed to immediately take over as Acting Chairman of Alimosho Local Government. The Lagos State House of Assembly had on Monday passed a resolution instructing Johnson to assume the leadership of the council.

The lawmakers also mandated the council’s management, including the manager and treasurer, to cooperate fully with Johnson to ensure smooth administration.

The decision follows the suspension of Chairman Jelili Sulaimon after the Lagos State House of Assembly deliberated on alleged misconduct. In response, four of the seven councillors in Alimosho have expressed support for Johnson, denouncing the earlier purported suspension of the Vice Chairman by three of their colleagues, which they described as “illegal.”

In a statement signed by the Deputy Leader of the council, Mojisola Fabusuyi Ayeni (Ward D), and three other councillors—Saheed Adejoke (Ward C), Rasheed Semiu (Ward E), and Elizabeth Fashina (Ward F)—the councillors condemned what they termed a “staged-managed and illegal suspension” of Johnson by a minority group acting under the instructions of the suspended Chairman Sulaimon.

The statement commended the intervention of the Lagos State House of Assembly and urged all stakeholders to remain calm. “We remain committed to supporting the state and federal governments in their efforts to improve the lives of our people, especially at the grassroots level,” the councillors declared.

They also highlighted their confidence in Johnson’s leadership, stating, “As a man of the people, we have no doubt that Hon. Akinpelu Johnson will deliver beyond expectations.”

The councillors reaffirmed their readiness to support Johnson as he takes the helm of Alimosho Local Government and urged the public to stay informed about any further developments.
