Alozie’s last-gasp goal sends Super Falcons to WAFCON final

By Olaolu Joseph –

Nigeria’s Super Falcons booked a spot in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco with a thrilling 2-1 victory over defending champions South Africa on Tuesday.

The match was decided by a late strike from defender Michele Alozie, who sealed the win just as the game seemed headed for extra time.

Nigeria dominated much of the game but missed several scoring chances before captain Rasheedat Ajibade broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 45th minute. South Africa’s Linda Mothalo equalized shortly after halftime, also converting from the spot.

Both teams pushed for a winner in an intense second half, but it was the Super Falcons who had the final say through Alozie’s decisive finish.

The victory sets up a final clash for Nigeria against the winner of the Morocco vs Ghana semifinal.

Mothalo’s goal was the first Nigeria had conceded in the tournament, underlining the team’s strong defensive record.

With their sights set firmly on the trophy, the Super Falcons are determined to bring home the title and make the nation proud.
