Amaechi condemns suspension of Rivers Governor, lawmakers, calls action unconstitutional

Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has strongly condemned the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly by President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Amaechi described the move as an “undemocratic and unconstitutional” action that effectively suspends democracy in Rivers State.

“The brazen and unilateral suspension of elected state officials by Mr. President is a clear violation of the Nigerian Constitution, which he swore to uphold,” Amaechi said.

Citing Section 188 of the Constitution, he stressed that a state governor can only be removed through a legal process, not by a presidential proclamation. He further argued that Section 305, which the President referenced in his announcement, does not grant such powers.

Amaechi expressed concerns that the development signals an orchestrated power grab in Rivers State, warning that it sets a dangerous precedent for democracy in Nigeria.

“This unlawful suspension of democratic institutions in my dear Rivers State is a clear attempt to impose control through unconstitutional means,” he stated.

Calling on political leaders, state governors, and legislators to resist the move, Amaechi urged the National Assembly to reject what he termed an “illegality” and prevent Nigeria from sliding into totalitarianism.

“As a former governor, I understand the role elected leaders must play in defending democracy. I commend those who have spoken against this unlawful suspension and urge others to do the same,” he added.
