The Osun State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps, has confirmed the death of one of its operatives, Mr. Lamidi Abiodun, who was killed in an ambush by suspected armed hoodlums at the Papa boundary area in Iwo, Osun State.
In a statement released to journalists, the corps’ spokesperson, Yusuf Idowu, also disclosed that a member of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), Nurudeen Alowonle, remains missing as of the time of filing this report, while another operative, Alex Sola, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg.
According to Idowu, the tragic incident occurred on Wednesday after local farmers in the Papa Farm area sent a distress call to the Iwo Area Command, reporting an attack on their farmland.
The response team, he said, was ambushed by gunmen allegedly led by a notorious criminal identified as Akeem Olofa. During the confrontation, Mr. Abiodun was assaulted.
“Although initial gunfire did not penetrate his body, he was brutally attacked with a machete to the head and died instantly at the scene. While most operatives managed to escape, Nurudeen Alowonle remains unaccounted for, and Alex Sola was shot in the leg,” the statement read.
The corps confirmed that the matter has been reported to the Nigeria Police in Iwo and that investigations are ongoing.
Efforts are also being intensified to apprehend the perpetrators, while the body of the slain officer has been deposited at a local mortuary.
The Amotekun Corps extended condolences to Abiodun’s family and reaffirmed its commitment to securing Osun communities against all forms of criminal activity.
