Amotekun shooting victim dies as Ondo ignores N30m compensation

Mr Oluwasegun Olayinka Oluwarotimi, a commercial motorcyclist who was shot by an operative of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps, has died, closing a long legal battle marked by claims of government neglect and unresolved court orders.

His death was announced in a statement on Wednesday by his lawyer, Tope Temokun, who signed the release on behalf of Tope Temokun Chambers.

Oluwarotimi died on February 4, 2026, more than four years after he was allegedly shot at Araromi Junction in Akure by an Amotekun operative on August 9, 2021. The shooting led to the amputation of one of his legs, leaving him permanently disabled and ending his means of livelihood as a commercial motorcyclist, according to the statement.

Following the incident, his legal representatives wrote several letters to the Ondo State Government and the Amotekun Corps between October 2022 and March 2023, demanding compensation and later compliance with a High Court judgment.

In March 2023, an Ondo State High Court awarded Oluwarotimi N30m in damages, a judgment that was later affirmed after the Court of Appeal struck out the state government’s appeal in November 2024.

Despite repeated appeals to the administrations of former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and incumbent Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as well as letters to the Attorney-General, the judgment sum remained unpaid, the statement said.

In addition, the deceased’s lawyer added that the victim’s health deteriorated steadily as he struggled with medical complications and financial hardship, forcing the initiation of garnishee proceedings in December 2025.

The statement alleged that the government failed to show empathy or comply with the subsisting judgment, despite the exhaustion of legal appeals, further warning that public confidence in the judiciary would continue to erode if court orders against government authorities were persistently ignored.
