Anthony Joshua recuperating, says Governor Abiodun

..says British High Commission notified

The Ogun State Government has confirmed that world boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, is recuperating in hospital following a road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday.

The accident occurred around midday and involved a Toyota Lexus vehicle conveying Joshua and three other passengers.

Two passengers died in the incident and were identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu (36), a Nigerian/British citizen, and Gami Sina (36), a British citizen.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, the Ogun State Government expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.

The statement said Governor Abiodun visited the hospital where Joshua was receiving treatment shortly after receiving information about the accident.

According to the government, the governor was later joined by Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and both leaders remained at the hospital for several hours to monitor the situation and ensure appropriate medical care.

Governor Abiodun said he personally oversaw Joshua’s treatment alongside Governor Sanwo-Olu, adding that they stayed at the hospital for over seven hours.

Other senior officials who visited the hospital included the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Mr. Bukola Olopade.

The state government disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was fully briefed on the incident and spoke with Joshua, his mother and Governor Abiodun, while the British High Commission was notified and is in contact with relevant authorities.

The Ogun State Government said Joshua remains in stable condition and is receiving appropriate medical care, adding that a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident has commenced and updates will be provided as necessary.
