APC accuses Peter Obi of self-promotion, inciting public outrage

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, of prioritizing his personal and political ambitions over the nation’s best interests.

This accusation comes after Obi’s recent criticism of the country’s economic regression over the past nine years under APC governance, which he expressed on Monday.

In his statement, Obi called for urgent actions to prevent further economic collapse and emphasized the necessity of creating an inclusive and sustainable economy to lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty.

Responding to Obi’s comments, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, released a statement on Tuesday, alleging that Obi is exploiting the current economic situation to incite mass outrage against President Bola Tinubu. Morka characterized Obi’s remarks as a blend of half-truths, distortions, and misinformation designed to undermine the Tinubu administration.

The APC criticized Obi for his claims that the Tinubu government is not addressing poverty and unemployment, calling him a “loquacious and disruptive backseat driver.”

“The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections and former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, has continued, unabashedly, to showcase his obsessive devotion to self-promotion against the best interest of Nigeria,” Morka stated.

“Mr. Obi’s latest statement on the country’s economic situation is an admixture of half-truths, blatant distortions, and misinformation calculated to mobilize outrage against the All Progressives Congress (APC) government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

Morka further argued that Obi’s conclusion that Nigeria’s economic crisis was caused by nine years of APC-led administration is a highly revisionist, dishonest, and deliberately misleading assessment of the country’s economic trajectory over the past decade.

He claimed that no efforts were being made by President Tinubu’s administration to tackle poverty and unemployment in the country.

The APC also attributed the current economic decline and hardship in Nigeria to the successive Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administrations. The party noted that the country’s GDP growth fell from 7.98% in 2010 to 2.79% in 2015.

According to the ruling party, the growth during the PDP tenures was mainly due to high crude oil prices, with much of the country’s earnings allegedly stolen.
