APC-Africa condemns arrests of pro-democracy advocates in Türkiye

The Association of Political Consultants Africa (APC-Africa) has strongly condemned the arrests of over 100 pro-democracy advocates in Türkiye, including globally respected political consultant and IAPC Vice President, Necati Özkan, as well as Istanbul Mayor and CHP presidential candidate, Ekrem Imamoğlu.

In a statement signed by its president, Kipngeno Duncan, APC-Africa described the arrests as a direct attack on democratic freedoms, political expression, and the rule of law, calling on the global community to denounce the crackdown.

The organization stated that the detentions were part of a broader campaign to silence dissent and weaken democracy in Türkiye. It demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all those detained.

APC-Africa reaffirmed its solidarity with Özkan, Imamoğlu, and all individuals targeted for exercising their political rights. The group urged the African Union, the United Nations, regional bodies, and democratic governments to hold the Turkish government accountable.

The statement emphasized that silence in the face of such repression enables further democratic backsliding and called for collective international action.

Highlighting the importance of political diversity, fair elections, and the protection of opposition voices, APC-Africa stressed that these principles are fundamental to any thriving democracy.

“As Africa continues to strengthen its democratic institutions, we stand firm in defending these values globally,” the statement read.

APC-Africa called on the international community to pressure Türkiye to end its persecution of political opponents and restore democratic norms.
