APC alerts security agencies over alleged NULGE protest in Osun

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –
The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alerted the police and other statutory security agencies over an alleged planned protest by the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in the state.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, the party claimed that the leadership of NULGE had directed its branches to mobilise 20 staff members per local government for a protest scheduled to take place at branches of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) in Osogbo next Monday.
Olabisi alleged that the planned protest was aimed at picketing the bank, kidnapping recalcitrant workers and disrupting commercial activities in the bank’s branches.
He further alleged that the state government was backing the planned protest with logistical support.
The APC expressed concern over what it described as the role of the union in the matter and urged its leadership to prioritise actions that would promote peace in the state.
“There is no plausible reason under the sun why NULGE should continue to make itself a laughing stock in the estimation of right-thinking members of society by even contemplating any protest over the autonomy granted to local government councils nationwide by the Supreme Court judgment.
“It would do the labour union a lot of good if its leadership can put on its thinking cap and prioritise actions and inactions that would promote peace in the state,” the statement read.
The party called on security agencies to be on alert to prevent any breakdown of law and order, while also advising parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against being used as willing tools in the hands of NULGE, whose motive it said is to needlessly disturb public peace in the state.
