APC alleges misconduct, mismanagement at PDP convention in Ibadan

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has berated the National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held in Ibadan over the weekend, describing it as a “carnival of shame, lawlessness and impunity.” The opposition party faulted the organisers for proceeding with the convention despite several court orders directing its suspension.

In a statement released on Sunday by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC accused Governor Seyi Makinde of leading a faction that defied judicial pronouncements to host delegates from across the country for the election of new PDP national officers. The party described the action as another display of impunity within the PDP.

The APC also criticised Governor Makinde for allegedly causing discomfort to residents of Ibadan during the period of the convention. It claimed that commercial drivers were compelled to abandon their normal activities and move to the venue of the event to create an impression of a large turnout.

The statement further accused the governor of ignoring complaints by residents whose properties were demolished along the proposed Ibadan Circular Road corridor. According to the APC, instead of addressing their concerns, Makinde worsened their hardship by restricting commercial vehicles, motorcycles and tricycles from operating during the convention.

Oyo APC additionally alleged that a large portion of the September allocations of the 33 local government councils was diverted to fund the PDP convention. The party claimed many PDP governors refused to contribute financially to the exercise, leaving the burden on the state government.

Describing the convention as “ill-fated,” the APC said the event marked “the beginning of the burial” of the PDP, accusing Makinde and his allies of pushing the party deeper into crisis. It maintained that the fallout from the event signalled further decline for the opposition party.

The statement advised the PDP to reconcile its warring factions if it hopes to regain political relevance. According to the APC, the party has already lost the 2027 general elections and must now look ahead to 2031 if it intends to remain competitive.
