APGA plans to adopt Tinubu as presidential candidate in 2027

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has announced that it will not field a presidential candidate in the 2027 general election, revealing plans to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu instead.

The party’s National Chairman, Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa, made this known on Thursday during a press briefing in Lagos while responding to questions about adopting a candidate from another political party.

Ezeokenwa explained that APGA would adopt Tinubu if he secures the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) through the party’s direct primary process.

“We hope that during the national convention of the APC, if he secures the nomination of his party through direct primaries, I can bet you that the national convention of APGA will adopt him as our presidential candidate,” he said.

He noted that the decision is based on the goodwill Tinubu has shown towards APGA and the alignment of the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda with the party’s ideology.

Ezeokenwa added that adopting candidates from other parties is not new, recalling that APGA adopted former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate in the 2011 and 2015 elections.

He also commented on the recent amendments to the Electoral Act, noting that the introduction of direct primaries would help reduce the high cost of candidate selection in political parties.

The APGA chairman disclosed that the party has commenced a digital membership registration and revalidation exercise in line with the new law, stating that the process began on March 1 and will run for one month.
