Appointments based on merit not ethnicity, Sanwo-Olu says

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed that appointments in his administration are based on competence, integrity and excellence rather than ethnicity.

The governor made the remarks on Saturday at a reception organised by Urhobo and Isoko elites in Lagos to honour the Deputy Chief of Staff, Samuel Egube. The event recognised Egube’s contributions to governance and public service in Lagos State.

Speaking at the ceremony, Sanwo-Olu said Egube’s appointment and steady rise in government were earned through professionalism, sound judgment and a consistent record of delivering results. He noted that his achievements reflect the importance his administration places on merit.

Furthermore, the governor praised Egube’s performance as Deputy Chief of Staff. He said Egube has provided effective leadership by coordinating the governor’s engagements and ensuring the smooth administration of the Governor’s Office.

Sanwo-Olu also described Egube as a dependable adviser whose integrity, loyalty and competence have earned his trust over more than two decades of personal and professional relationship. He added that Egube had previously distinguished himself as Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget by promoting people-centred budgeting and strengthening performance-driven governance.

Although the event celebrated one of the Urhobo nation’s distinguished sons, the governor stressed that excellence goes beyond ethnic or regional identity. “We don’t ask where excellence comes from. What matters is the ability to do the job well and serve the people faithfully,” Sanwo-Olu said.

In his response, Egube expressed gratitude to the Urhobo and Isoko elites for the recognition. He described the honour as a source of encouragement to remain committed to excellence, integrity and selfless service in the discharge of his responsibilities.

The event was attended by senior government officials, political leaders, traditional rulers, family members and associates. They commended Egube for his dedication to public service and his contributions to the development and progress of Lagos State.
