Aregbesola confident of ADC’s victory in Osun 2026 governorship election

The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, has expressed confidence that divine intervention will grant his party victory in the 2026 governorship election.
Aregbesola made the remark at the 60th birthday celebration of former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Najeem Salam.
The former Minister of Interior, who acknowledged the presence of the incumbent Speaker of the State Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, and the representative of the state governor, George Alabi, stated that God is supporting his new party to win the state in the next election.
According to him, “I don’t want to offend the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Egbedun, and the representative of the governor. But I am very sure that it is our own that God will do.”
In his lecture titled “Legislative Contributions to the Sustenance of Nigeria’s Democracy since 1999: Hurdles We Must Overcome,” Professor Shola Omotola stressed the urgent need for laws to address frequent political defections, noting that this poses a major threat to Nigeria’s democratic process.
Omotola argued that the phenomenon of leaving political parties without consequences has significantly hindered the legislature’s ability to contribute to the consolidation of democracy.
He called for reforms to strengthen internal party democracy, adding that there should also be appropriate legal sanctions for party switching to serve as a deterrent.
Also, the Assembly Speaker, Egbedun, hailed Salam as a role model, describing him as an exemplary leader whose contributions to the legislature remain significant.
