Army recruitment: South East records low turnout of applications

The Nigerian Army has raised concerns over the alarmingly low number of applicants from the South-East region in its ongoing nationwide recruitment exercise.

According to Brigadier-General Chima Ekeator, who leads the Army Force Headquarters Recruitment Sensitisation Team in Anambra, only 200 youths from the region have registered so far, compared to over 4,000 in other parts of the country.

Ekeator disclosed this during a sensitisation program held for community leaders and youth representatives, aimed at encouraging greater participation among southeastern youths.

“This sensitisation is crucial. If youth participation from this region remains low, the South-East risks being underrepresented in the Nigerian Army,” Ekeator said.

He appealed to youth leaders and community heads to mobilise young people and inform them about the opportunities available through the recruitment drive.

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, through his Commissioner for Youth Development, Patrick Aghambah, pledged the state’s support in raising awareness.

He called on traditional rulers and community leaders to mobilise at least 10 youths each for the exercise.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs, Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne, noted that the recruitment is targeting young Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 22, and he urged eligible individuals to take advantage of the opportunity.
