As NSC Chairman, I’ll aim to revitalize Nigerian sports — Dikko

Mallam Shehu Dikko, the new Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), has shared his plans to transform Nigerian sports by adopting a fresh, business-oriented approach.
Speaking on TVC News Network, Dikko emphasized that it won’t be “business as usual,” acknowledging the high expectations to rejuvenate sports across the country.
“I’ve worked with multiple Sports Ministers and served on various sports committees. It would be a blessing to extend the successes we’ve achieved in football to other sports, particularly in terms of funding. We aim to create a balanced structure that supports all sports,” he said.
Dikko explained that sports should be seen as a national asset and that, given his experience, he understands past mistakes and how to correct them. “This time, things will be different. We’ll operate the commission like a business. We’re setting up the right structure for success, and anyone who can contribute will be welcomed.”
Highlighting his vision for a “sports economy,” Dikko outlined plans to decentralize the commission by creating zonal offices to enhance local development and streamline the path to the national level. “We need to put building blocks in place, establishing essential frameworks and policies that will drive our success.”
According to Dikko, sports deserve special funding and concessions. His administration intends to leverage the updated Sports Commission Act to secure this, with a focus on improving sporting federations and addressing the crucial issue of funding. “Funding is 80% of the challenge. If we get it right, you’ll see the impact on our athletes.”
Dikko also stressed the importance of nationwide infrastructure to nurture talent at all levels. “We need facilities across the country to produce athletes who can excel nationally. In the next few months, I want people to hold us accountable and see the reforms we bring.”
