ASUU expresses disappointment over FG’s inaction on agreements

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has voiced frustration over the Federal Government’s failure to address any of its long-standing demands, despite previous discussions aimed at resolving their disputes amicably.

ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, in an interview with Nigerian Tribune, lamented that the government has not taken any tangible steps beyond constituting a renegotiation team.

According to him, while ASUU has fulfilled its part of the renegotiation process, the government’s representatives have yet to provide any feedback.

“It has been about two months now, and the government’s team has not returned to us, let alone signed a new deal. This shows that the political class does not prioritize public universities,” Osodeke stated.

He further criticized the current administration for its lack of commitment to improving education, pointing out that previous governments at least made some efforts in addressing university funding and other sectoral challenges.

“No single issue has been permanently resolved since this government took office more than a year ago,” he said. “The education sector remains stagnant while the wealthy continue to send their children abroad, leaving children of the poor to suffer.”

Osodeke emphasized that unless this situation changes, Nigeria’s progress will remain stunted. He revealed that ASUU members would soon convene to decide on their next course of action.

ASUU has previously warned of a possible nationwide strike if the government fails to meet its obligations.
