ASUU raises legal concerns over tenure extension of UNIOSUN vice chancellor

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Osun State University (UNIOSUN) chapter, has said the law establishing the university does not provide for an extension of the tenure of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Clement Adebooye.

The union’s position follows Governor Ademola Adeleke’s approval of a two-year extension for Adebooye, whose initial five-year tenure, which began in January 2022, is due to expire in January 2027.

ASUU Chairman, UNIOSUN chapter, Dr. Wende Olaosebikan, said the university’s law provides for a one-year extension for the Librarian, Bursar and Registrar but makes no such provision for the vice-chancellor.

Olaosebikan said the union had also studied the University’s Miscellaneous Act of the National Assembly and provisions of the National Universities Commission (NUC), which, according to him, do not provide for tenure extension for any principal officer.

“We as a union of intellectuals, heard the news. After much persuasion, we were led to believe that it was just an offer and that the direct beneficiary of the offer has not actually accepted it. We have also studied critically the UNIOSUN Establishment Law, which did not give room for extension of tenure for the vice-chancellor,” he said.

Olaosebikan added that the union would not act on hearsay or media reports, saying it would first seek confirmation from the vice-chancellor and expected him to do what was right.

Meanwhile, the Osun State House of Assembly on Thursday passed the Osun State University Establishment Amendment Bill 2026 during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Adewale Egbedun.

Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Sikiru Akinloyè Bajepade, said the bill seeks to amend the law to allow the extension of the vice-chancellor’s tenure by two years.
