ASUU strike dates back in time, won’t spoil Buhari’s legacy, says Adesina

Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity Femi Adesina says the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) won’t have any negative effects on the legacy already built by the president.

Adesina was speaking on a Channels TV Programme, Politics Today which was monitored by our correspondent.

The president’s media aide said it was President Buhari’s desire that the lingering ASUU strike be resolved and resolved completely.

“He (Buhari) spoke about it today, he appealed to ASUU to consider the plight of students who had been home since; this are young people. There is a saying that the devil finds work for an idle hand, at that age. They can fall into any mischief because they are not engaged, they are not occupied. So, he appealed to ASUU to consider the plight of these young ones. It shows you that the president is ready to have this matter resolved and resolved once and for all.

“Last week, I saw something on Facebook, Alhaji Shehu Shagari appealing to ASUU to go back to class. Alhaji Shagari ruled 43 years ago and he was appealing to ASUU to please go back to class, so, that shows you that this is an endemic issue.

“Left to government, the students should go back to school tomorrow, but then, the issues have to be resolved and resolved conclusively so that in another six weeks or six months, we don’t go back to where we are today.

“It would not vitiate the legacy of the president in any way because this dates back in time. It was there under Shagari, it was there under Buhari as military head of state, it was there under Babangida, it was there under Shonekan, under anyone. I wouldn’t say it’s an excuse to continue, let it be resolved and resolved right,” Adesina said.
