At theatrical command performance, Adekunle Fajuyi comes alive again

The memory of the heroic deeds of late Military Governor of Western Region, Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi came alive again at his birth place, Ado-Ekiti on Sunday during a theatrical performance of a stage play, ‘Fajuyi”, to mark the one year anniversary, in office, of Governor Biodun Oyebanji.
Lt. Col Fajuyi died alongside the then Head of State, General Aguiyi Ironsi in 1966 military coup that terminated the first Republic headed by Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa.
The Head of State, Ironsi was in Ibadan, capital of the Western Region on a State Visit where Fajuyi was the host when the coup happened. Fajuyi has remained a folkhero since then for his bravery and courage and for choosing to die with his Commander-in-Chief rather than surrender him to the coupists.
Fajuyi, a native of Ado-Ekiti, capital of Ekiti State has been celebrated since his heroic death through many political, cultural, social and academic platforms as a way to immortalise him.
Writing on the command performance that took place at the ultra modern Obafemi Awolowo Convention Centre in the state capital, Governor Oyebanji said:
“My darling wife Olayemi, and I joined hundreds of other Ekiti residents at the Command Performance of Fajuyi for Nigeria, a stage play on the heroic deeds of former military Governor of the old Western State, Col. Adekunle Fajuyi at the Obafemi Awolowo Civic and Convention Centre, Ado Ekiti, Saturday evening.
“The Ado- Ekiti born Fajuyi symbolized honesty, honour, integrity, and unparalleled loyalty. His legacy continues to shine brightly, and as a State, we will always honour his memory.
“In light of his contributions, I advocate for the creation of a national monument in his honour, along with a posthumous national award to benefit his family.
“I extend my gratitude to the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, the talented actors in the play, the Duke of Shomolu Foundation (DSOF), other sponsors and partners, and especially Premium Trust Bank for hosting this remarkable program.
“Ekiti kete will embrace Fajuyi’s legacy, emphasizing and exhibiting his values of courage, loyalty and dedication wherever we go.
“May God continue to bless the family of the late Adekunle Fajuyi, our hero. May God bless Ekiti State, and Nigeria as a whole.”
