Atalanta to renew Lookman’s contract amid interest from top clubs

Atalanta are actively pursuing a contract extension for Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman, whose current deal runs until 2026.

The proposed renewal includes a significant salary increase, reflecting the club’s determination to keep him in Bergamo amid growing interest from top European clubs, including PSG, Manchester United, and Real Madrid.

Despite PSG’s concrete attempt to sign Lookman last summer, no substantial offers have been made in recent weeks. Atalanta, currently contending for the Serie A title and excelling in the Champions League, have ruled out a January transfer, emphasizing their unwillingness to lose key players mid-season.

Italian journalist Paolo Paganini recently confirmed PSG’s persistent interest, stating, “He is on Paris Saint-Germain’s shopping list, but it remains to be seen if Atalanta can do without someone like Lookman in January.”

However, sources in Italy indicate that Atalanta have decided internally to retain Lookman at least until after their crucial Champions League clash with Barcelona on January 29, just days before the transfer window closes on February 2.

While a January departure appears unlikely, the situation could change next summer if renewal negotiations falter. Atalanta have reportedly valued Lookman at €60–€70 million, a fee both PSG and Manchester United deem reasonable for a player of his caliber.

The 27-year-old has been a standout performer this season, registering nine goals and five assists in 15 appearances across Serie A and the Champions League.

His meteoric rise since his €15 million move to Atalanta in 2022 has been remarkable, highlighted by a historic hat-trick in last season’s Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, the first-ever in a European Cup final.

Lookman’s exploits have earned him widespread recognition, including a 14th-place finish in the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings and nominations for the CAF Men’s Player of the Year and the Globe Soccer Awards’ Best Men’s Player.

Atalanta remain confident in their ability to secure a contract extension, ensuring Lookman’s continued contributions to their ambitious projects in both domestic and European competitions.
