Atiku Abubakar explains other name in WAEC certificate, denies forgery

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed the allegations of forgery levelled against him by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The WAEC certificate Atiku presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2023 presidential election showed his name as Sadiq Abubakar.
In a tweet posted on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, Dele Momodu, a media personality and supporter of Mr Abubakar, shared the response of the former vice-president to the accusations by the APC.
The APC had claimed that Mr Abubakar used a proxy, Sadiq Abubakar, to sit for his West African Examinations Council (WAEC) certificate in 1961, and later swore an affidavit to change his name to Atiku Abubakar.
However, Mr Abubakar said he was the same person as Sadiq Abubakar, and that he used his original name throughout his academic and professional career.
“Yes I used Sadiq Abubakar to sit for my WAEC and after passing my exams I went to swear an affidavit to say I am the same person as ATIKU Abubakar. I went to ABU as Atiku Abuakar and passed my Exams as Atiku Abubakar. Interviewed as Atiku Abubakar by the Federal Civil Service Commission and hired into the Customs Service as Atiku Abubakar. So where is forgery there?” Mr Abubakar was quoted as saying in the tweet.
