Atiku criticizes Tinubu over subsidy payments, contradictory statements

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized President Bola Tinubu for continuing to pay subsidies on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and issuing contradictory statements regarding the practice.
Atiku’s remarks come after President Tinubu recently approved the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to use the 2023 dividends due to the federation for subsidizing petrol.
In a post on his verified Facebook page, Atiku expressed concern over these developments, describing them as another instance of opaque governance under Tinubu’s administration.
He pointed out that this decision contradicts the President’s earlier national broadcast, in which he declared an end to subsidy payments.
Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, accused Tinubu’s government of continuing to pay subsidies through less transparent methods, undermining the President’s earlier commitment to ending the practice.
“This discrepancy between the President’s statements and his actions not only undermines the moral authority of his leadership but also significantly erodes the credibility of his administration,” Atiku stated.
Atiku also expressed his disappointment at the prolonged delay in reopening the Port Harcourt Refinery, calling it a national disgrace. He held President Tinubu, who also serves as the Minister of Petroleum Resources, responsible for the failure.
Atiku further highlighted that NNPCL’s persistent denials had exacerbated the challenges faced by Nigerians due to fuel shortages and rising prices. He voiced concern over the President’s silence on reports that NNPCL had diverted funds to cover subsidy payments.
Atiku urged President Tinubu to take responsibility for addressing these critical issues to alleviate fuel scarcity and inflation for Nigerians.
