Atiku demands clarity on El-Rufai’s detention, raises health, rights concerns

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on the Federal Government to provide immediate clarification on the whereabouts and condition of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, amid reports of his detention.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Atiku expressed concern over El-Rufai’s health and welfare, noting that family, friends, and associates are deeply worried about his safety. He urged the government to specify which agency is responsible for holding the former governor, whether the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), the State Security Service (SSS/DSS), or any other body.
“Secrecy surrounding detentions only fuels suspicion and undermines public trust. Nigerians deserve transparency, and the authorities must ensure that El-Rufai’s safety, dignity, and access to medical care, family, and legal counsel are fully guaranteed,” he said.
The former VP described reports that El-Rufai suffered a nosebleed while family members were allegedly denied access as “deeply troubling” and unacceptable in a democratic society. He added that if authorities cannot guarantee the former governor’s health and fundamental rights, he should be granted bail immediately.
Atiku also warned against the perception of selective prosecution, claiming that opposition figures are being disproportionately targeted while others evade scrutiny. He stressed that anti-corruption efforts must remain transparent, even-handed, and free from political bias.
“The continued detention of El-Rufai under unclear circumstances raises serious questions about motive. Anti-corruption cannot be credible if it appears partisan, coercive, or strategically timed,” Atiku added.
He further emphasised that justice must be transparent, accountability even-handed, and the rule of law applied to all without fear, favour, or political interference.
The former vice president concluded by warning the government that it would be held accountable should any harm come to El-Rufai, urging authorities to act promptly to safeguard his rights and welfare.
