Atiku slams Wike, says he was unfit for vice president role

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has responded to claims by Nyesom Wike’s camp regarding the selection process of his 2023 running mate, stating that Wike was unsuitable for the position in a ticket meant to unify rather than divide Nigeria.
In a statement issued by the Atiku Media Office on Friday, the former vice president dismissed assertions by Wike’s spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, that the former Rivers State governor had secured 13 votes from a committee set up to recommend a vice-presidential candidate, while Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa had only two.
The statement clarified that the selection of a running mate is not determined by votes or committee recommendations but remains the prerogative of the presidential candidate. “Leadership is not just about numbers; it is about temperament, dignity, and the ability to unify,” the statement read.
Atiku further justified his choice of Okowa as his running mate, emphasizing the Delta governor’s intellect, composure, and statesmanship. He stated that Wike’s conduct, both as a former governor and as the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has vindicated his decision not to pick him.
“We make no apologies for choosing Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa. The events that have unfolded since then, particularly Wike’s public conduct, have only reinforced the wisdom of that decision,” the statement added.
Atiku also criticized Wike’s camp for using the Ramadan and Lent periods for political attacks, urging them to focus on uniting rather than deepening divisions within the party and the country.
The statement concluded with a call for reconciliation and unity, stressing the need to move beyond personal grievances and focus on rebuilding the party and Nigeria.
