Atiku’s security intact, APC tells Timi Frank to prove assassination claim

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has denied allegations that the Federal Government is plotting to assassinate former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, describing the claim as false.

The council also challenged Timi Frank, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who made the allegation, to provide evidence to security agencies for investigation.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the council’s spokesperson, Dele Alake, urged security agencies to invite Frank to substantiate his claim, stressing that any credible threat to life should be investigated regardless of political affiliation.

“We categorically reject the claim that the presidency of Nigeria or the APC Campaign Council is involved in any plot to assassinate former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or any opposition figure,” the statement said.

The council also dismissed claims that security personnel attached to Atiku had been withdrawn, insisting that the former vice-president remained protected by the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).

According to the statement, President Bola Tinubu recently directed security agencies to reinforce protection for presidential, vice-presidential, governorship and deputy governorship candidates across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.

It added that Atiku, as a former vice-president and presidential candidate, enjoyed two levels of state-funded security protection, claiming that his security arrangements had been strengthened.

The campaign council said Tinubu recognised opposition politics as an essential component of Nigeria’s democracy, citing his role in opposition politics before the defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 general election.
