Atiku’s son stays in PDP despite mass APC defections in Adamawa

The Adamawa State Commissioner for Works, Adamu Atiku Abubakar — son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar — has opted not to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), bucking a trend of political realignment within the state.

Adamu was notably absent from the list of 22 commissioners who accompanied Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri in publicly declaring their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, a move that has significantly reshaped Adamawa’s political landscape.

His decision has drawn attention as he remains one of the few senior government officials yet to align with the APC, a choice observers say could influence political dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Recent developments show that Atiku Abubakar himself has been actively repositioning within Nigeria’s opposition politics. After resigning from the PDP in 2025, he officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Atiku has also been vocal in current national debates, joining other opposition leaders to reject provisions of the 2026 Electoral Act, which they describe as “offensive” and detrimental to transparent elections, and urging unity among opposition parties ahead of the 2027 polls.

While Adamu has not issued a public explanation for staying in the PDP, sources suggest he has chosen to maintain his current political alignment for the present moment.
