Average price paid by consumers for petrol grows by 33.54% to N1027.76/litre, says NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday revealed that the average retail price paid by consumers for Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) for May 2025 was N1027.76, indicating a 33.54per cent Month-on-Month (MoM) increase compared to the N769.62/litre recorded in May 2024.
The Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) Price Watch by NBS for May 2025 stated that comparing the average price value April 2025, the average retail price decreased by 17.07per cent from N1239.33.
According to the report, Sokoto State by state profile analysis, had the highest average retail price for Petrol, at N1100.50, Zamfara and Anambra States were next, with N1093.21, and N1084.13, respectively.
“Conversely, Yobe, Rivers and Taraba States had the lowest average retail prices for Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol), at N950.60, N981.67, and N983.00 respectively.
“Lastly, on the Zonal profile, the South East Zone had the highest average retail price of N1049.15, while the North Central Zone had the lowest price of N1005.42,” the report added.
A check by WESTERNPOST in the South West region of the country showed that average retail price paid by consumers for petrol stood at N1024.81/litre in May 2025, about 22.23 per cent MoM increase over N838.41/litre in April 2025.
According to the report, Ondo state, followed by Lagos state paid the hiighest amount for petrol in May 2025.
The average retail price paid by consumers for petrol in Ondo state at N1,081/litre in May 2025, about 5.66 per cent decline MoM from N1148.42/litre paid in April 2025.
Also, average retail price paid by consumers for petrol in Lagos state at N1,077/litre, about 1.17 per cent MoM increase from N1064.58/litre declared by NBS in April 2025.
