Aviation security: NCAA establishes unit for drones integration

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced plans to establish a dedicated unit for the integration of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly known as drones, into its operations.
The Authority stated that the move aims to enhance safety measures and regulate the growing use of drones across various sectors.
In a statement released via its official X handle on Monday, the NCAA highlighted the diverse applications and advantages of UAS while emphasizing the importance of maintaining a balance between innovation and safety.
The statement outlined the role of drones in activities ranging from commercial and scientific endeavors to policing, agriculture, and even entertainment, such as drone racing.
According to the statement, to facilitate the seamless integration of drones into the national airspace, the Acting Director General of Civil Aviation Nigeria, Captain Najomo, has approved the establishment of a specialized UAS Integration Unit within the NCAA.
This unit will be responsible for overseeing the registration, licensing, and monitoring of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) in collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the aviation industry.
Acknowledging the potential economic benefits and the evolving nature of UAS technology, the NCAA highlighted the importance of regulating this emerging trend to ensure safety, innovation and job opportunities.
“There is an urgent need to strike an equilibrium, a balance between innovation and safety. Hence the move to integrate, facilitate, embrace and regulate this emerging trend, arising from the development and deployment of this fascinating technology.
The Unmanned Aircraft System is an evolving prospect that will present Nigeria with job and wealth creation benefits as well as an impending alternative in air transportation,” it read in part.
The establishment of the UAS Integration Unit reflects Nigeria’s commitment to harnessing the opportunities presented by drone technology while addressing regulatory challenges in air transportation.
