Aviation unions suspend planned strike after government intervention

By Kunle Sanni –
Aviation unions have suspended their planned strike, which was scheduled to begin on Monday, following positive developments and intervention by the Federal Government.
In a joint statement on August 8, the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUCPTRE) confirmed the decision to defer the industrial action.
According to the unions, the resolution came after the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development and senior officials of the ministry facilitated progress on the workers’ demand for improved remuneration.
They cited the release of a “no objection” letter from the Budget Office and a corresponding communication from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, as well as assurances from the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to pay the new wages with August salaries.
Union leaders stressed that the suspension was a demonstration of good faith and that the situation would be reviewed at the end of August 2025.
The statement was signed by Comrade AbdulRasaq Saidu, Secretary-General, ANAP; Comrade Odinaka J. Igbokwe, Deputy General Secretary, NUATE; Comrade Frances Akinjole, Principal Deputy General Secretary, ATSSSAN; and Comrade Alo Lawrence O., General Secretary, AUCPTRE.
