Bangladesh PM Hasina quits after deadly protests, Army announces interim gov’t

The Army Chief of Bangladesh says Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned after weeks of unrest. Her aide says she fled the capital, Dhaka, by helicopter.

In an address to the nation, General Waker-Uz-Zaman also says an interim government will be formed to run the country.

Thousands of people take to the streets to celebrate, while many storm the prime minister’s official residence.

Demonstrations that began last month over governmental job quotas had expanded into nationwide unrest.

Students have been marching Dhaka to demand justice for some 300 people killed since last month.

As tens of thousands of people celebrate Hasina’s resignation in Dhaka, a student protester says he feels “really proud” of the movement, which “worked really hard” to achieve its victory in removing the prime minister from office.

Following the army chief’s statement about the move to create an interim government, the protester told Al Jazeera that one of the key demands from the students is justice for those killed in the protests.

“A lot of students gave their lives for this, and finally we achieved victory, but we should get justice first, we should fight for it,” he said.

The whole city is in the streets, and it’s probably the same all across the country.

People are celebrating, people are jubilant.

Unfortunately, there have been incidents of vandalism, setting fire to some ruling party’s offices and vandalism in the official prime minister’s residence.

But by and large, it’s not been a violent celebration. It’s pretty much peaceful, with people out in the streets.
