Nigeria’s Super Eagles were on Tuesday held to a 1-1 draw by Bafana Bafana of South Africa in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.

The result puts South Africa within touching distance of securing the group’s ticket, while Nigeria’s chances hang in the balance.

The much-anticipated encounter, played at the Toyota Stadium, Bloemfontein, saw both sides battling for maximum points but settling for a share of the spoils.

Both teams struggled on an unsuitable playing surface that limited clear-cut chances. Nigeria pressed more in attack, while South Africa kept numbers at the back.

The hosts went ahead in the 25th minute when Nigeria’s skipper, William Troost-Ekong, inadvertently turned in a cross from a South African player.

Nigeria equalised in the 44th minute through defender Calvin Bassey, who rose to head home a Bright Osayi-Samuel delivery, ensuring the first half ended 1-1.

The draw leaves South Africa top of the group with 17 points, while Nigeria now have 11 points.
