Bauchi governor meets APC leaders amid defection speculation

The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, on Wednesday held a closed-door meeting with Nentawe Yilwatda, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano State, amid growing speculation about his possible defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The meeting, which took place at the Government House in Bauchi, comes as Mohammed weighs his political future following the lingering crisis within the PDP.

A day earlier, the governor had disclosed during a meeting with leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that he had explored the possibility of joining the APC with his supporters but found the ruling party unreceptive.

He said efforts to resolve internal disputes within the PDP had failed despite several reconciliation attempts, leaving him and his allies to consider alternative political platforms.

“We have found ourselves in a very serious situation. I have done everything possible to ensure reconciliation, but it has not worked. We explored all options, including the APC, but discovered that we are not wanted there,” Mohammed said.

According to the governor, committees were set up at both the national and state levels to evaluate available options, including potential alignment with other parties.

While he described the ADC as a viable platform for him and his political associates, his engagement with APC leadership has fuelled fresh indications that he may still be considering a move to the ruling party.

The APC currently controls a majority of states across the country, strengthening its position as a dominant force in Nigeria’s political landscape.
