Boat captain bags life imprisonment for causing death of 13 passengers

A boat operator, Happiness Elebiju has been sentenced to life imprisonment for causing the death of 13 passengers in a boat accident.
Elebiju was arraigned before Justice Josephine Oyefeso of the Lagos State High Court, sitting in Lekki, on 11 counts bordering on manslaughter and operating a boat without a licence.
Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs Olayinka Adeyemi told the court that Elebiju committed the crime on July 29, 2020, after loading his passengers from Kirikiri to Badagry.
Adeyemi said Elebiju drove his boat, with the inscription, ‘Mount Zion Transport’ in a reckless and dangerous manner, causing the death of some of the passengers.
The prosecution called five witnesses in the case after the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
Ruling on the case, the judge held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Asides the life imprisonment, Justice Oyefeso also sentenced Elebiju to six months’ imprisonment for operating a boat without a licence.
Man bags 10 years in prison for failure to pay for recharge cards
A man in Kaduna State, Hamisu Umar has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for buying MTN recharge cards worth N3.7m from his acquaintance, Abubakar Abba on credit and refusing to pay at the appointed time.
Umar was arraigned before Justice A.A Bello on a one count charge bordering on cheating by the Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
According to the charge, Umar had obtained the recharge cards on credit in 2019 from Abba.
The charge reads: “That you, Hamisu Umar (M), sometime in 2019 at Kaduna within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, deceived one Abubakar Abba to deliver to you MTN recharge cards valued at N3,749,950.00 only on credit, which you dishonestly refused to pay back, and thereby committed cheating, an offence contrary to Section 306 (a) of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law of 2017 and punishable under Section 307 of the same Law.”
The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge, prompting the prosecution counsel, M.E Eimonye, to ask the court to convict him according to the law.
Justice Bello convicted and sentenced the defendant to 10 years imprisonment with an option of fine of N200,000.
The convict was also ordered to restitute the victim.
