On Tuesday, U.S. President Joe Biden called Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to express appreciation for Nigeria’s partnership with the United States, particularly acknowledging the recent release of Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive detained on money laundering charges.

Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, disclosed the information while briefing reporters at the State House.

He noted that the call, which took place around 4 p.m., highlights both leaders’ commitment to mutual security, economic growth, and enhanced global representation.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also expressed gratitude to Nigeria for approving Gambaryan’s release. The Federal High Court in Abuja had ordered his release the previous Wednesday, following an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The EFCC cited the detainee’s deteriorating health and ongoing diplomatic interactions between Nigeria and the United States as factors leading to the release.

Minister Tuggar added, “President Tinubu directed me to inform you of his phone call with President Biden. During the conversation, President Biden thanked President Tinubu for the partnership and collaboration between our nations, especially regarding law enforcement efforts and the release of a high-profile individual tied to the cryptocurrency sector. President Tinubu responded with appreciation for the ongoing cooperation with the U.S.”

Tuggar further detailed that the two leaders discussed security issues across Africa. Biden assured Tinubu that the U.S.-Nigeria partnership would continue to grow in the years ahead.

He added that they addressed efforts for Africa’s representation on the United Nations Security Council, with Biden reiterating U.S. support for two permanent seats for Africa.
