Brazil’s Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin, and his wife, Maria Lúcia Alckmin, arrived in Abuja on Tuesday morning for the Second Session of the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM)—a high-level summit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and unlocking major trade and investment opportunities.

According to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, spokesperson to Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Brazilian delegation landed at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where they were received by senior Nigerian officials, including Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia; Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole; Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha; and Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari.

Welcoming the delegation, Senator Hadejia described the visit as a pivotal moment for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting Brazil’s position as a strategic partner for Nigeria’s economic transformation.

He emphasized that the dialogue mechanism reflects Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging South-South partnerships for mutual development.

“Brazil’s expertise in agribusiness, energy transition, and industrial development aligns perfectly with Nigeria’s transformation priorities,” Hadejia stated.

The three-day summit is expected to produce concrete outcomes, including the signing of over 30 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) across key sectors such as defence cooperation, agricultural technology transfer, renewable energy, and cultural exchange.

Stakeholders believe the agreements could unlock billions of dollars in trade and investment, boosting Nigeria’s diversification efforts and strengthening ties between two of the largest economies in the Global South.
