Buhari orders Amaechi, Malami, other ministers with political ambitions to resign

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered all his cabinet members and appointees who are contesting for various elective positions to resign.

Minister of Information, Lai Muhammed told journalists that Buhari gave the order at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday.

The information minister said the FEC members were given till Monday, May 16 to turn in their resignation letters.

“The mandate I have from the President is to announce that all members of the Federal Executive Council contesting for elective office must resign their ministerial cabinet appointments on or before Monday the 16th of May, 2022,” he said.

Among those expected to resign are Ministers of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi; Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio; Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige; Science, Technology and Innovation, Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba; State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, all of whom have joined the presidential race on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Abubakar Malami, is also contesting for the governorship election in Kebbi State on the ticket of APC, while Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Uche Ogah, is vying for the governorship seat in Abia State.

Minister of Women Affairs Pauline Tallen is also vying for the Plateau south senatorial seat in the 2023 general elections, while Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs Tayo Alasoadura is also hoping to make a return to the red chamber to represent Ondo Central Senatorial District.
