BREAKING: El-Rufai writes NSA, seeks clarification on alleged importation of odourless poison from Poland

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has written to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu seeking clarification over reports that the ONSA procured a quantity of thallium sulphate, a substance known for its high toxicity.

In a letter dated January 30, and addressed to the Office of the National Security Adviser, (ONSA) in Abuja, El-Rufai said he was requesting clarification and reassurance regarding information allegedly available to opposition political leaders about the procurement of approximately 10 kilograms of thallium sulphate, reportedly sourced from a supplier in Poland.

He described thallium salts as “highly toxic and tightly controlled substances,” stressing the need for public safety, democratic accountability and the maintenance of public trust.

The former governor requested details on the intended purpose and end-use of the substance, the identity of the supplier, and whether the material was imported under an existing chemical or defence permit. He also asked for clarification on the total quantity and specific form or concentration procured, as well as storage and security arrangements upon arrival.

El-Rufai further sought information on regulatory oversight and coordination with relevant public health and environmental agencies, including the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). He also inquired whether any public health risk assessments or hazard-mitigation plans had been developed, given the compound’s toxicity.

He said the inquiry was made in good faith to ensure due process, safety standards and transparency are observed, adding that public confidence in national institutions is strengthened when potential risks are openly addressed.

El-Rufai copied the correspondence to NAFDAC, NCDC, and the national chairmen of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Posting the letter on his X account on Sunday, El-Rufai wrote: “As part of my duty as a citizen, I wrote to the NSA to seek clarification on reports about the importation by his office of thallium sulphate, a very dangerous toxin. It’s a matter of concern if anyone brings in any poison, more so an odourless, colourless one.”
