BREAKING: Nigeria’s Statistician-General, Harry, dies

Nigeria’s Statistician-General, Simon Harry, died on Wednesday after a brief illness.

His dead was confirmed to Premium Times by spokesperson of the National Bureau of Statistics, Sunday Ichedi.

He, however, said details would be made available later.

Harry died eight months after he was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari to succeed Yemi Kale as statistician-general of the federation.

The late Harry joined the Federal Office of Statistics as Statistician 11 in 1992, rising to the position of a substantive Director of Statistics in 2019.

There had been rumour about his death on Sunday, which was quickly refuted by Ichedi.

“The fact of the matter is that the Statistician-General was slightly indisposed on Saturday and following medication is now recuperating.

“We are well certain that he would, in a matter of a few days, be back to his desk and continue his work in repositioning the NBS as the foremost national statistics agency in Africa and among the best globally,” the NBS spokesperson had said in a statement on Sunday.
