BREAKING: Ronaldo handed 30-day suspension over Portugal camp incident

Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and fined €255 by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after reportedly leaving Portugal’s national team camp following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus.
The federation’s disciplinary council announced the decision on Monday, October 19, 2026, following an investigation into the incident. The case centred on Ronaldo’s reported departure from the team’s camp in Copenhagen ahead of Portugal’s Nations League fixture against Denmark.
The disagreement reportedly began after Ronaldo was left on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway. The Al-Nassr forward allegedly felt that Jesus had promised him playing time but failed to honour the agreement, leading to his decision to leave the camp.
Jesus, however, denied promising Ronaldo a place in the starting lineup or guaranteeing him playing time. The disagreement raised questions about the relationship between the Portugal captain and the coach, although Jesus indicated that the situation could be resolved.
Following the incident, the federation opened disciplinary proceedings against Ronaldo on October 9. The council subsequently ruled that his actions breached Article 160(1) of its disciplinary regulations, which covers leaving national team duty without proper authorisation.
Ronaldo later apologised for his conduct, including his failure to acknowledge supporters after the match against Norway and his departure from the camp. He accepted responsibility for his actions and expressed his readiness to face the consequences.
The 30-day suspension represents the minimum penalty under the federation’s rules for such an offence, with the regulations allowing bans of between one and six months. Ronaldo’s reported remorse and contributions to football were also considered in the disciplinary process.
The suspension’s effect on Ronaldo’s availability for Portugal’s upcoming fixtures will depend on how the ban is applied and the time already served. The decision comes as the 41-year-old continues his international career while balancing his commitments with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.
