BREAKING: Students protest renaming of Polytechnic Ibadan

By Adejayan Gbenga –

Students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, on Tuesday took to the streets to protest the Oyo State Government’s decision to rename the institution to Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan.

The renaming, announced by Governor Seyi Makinde last week, has sparked outrage among the students, who have strongly rejected the move and demanded its reversal.

Carrying placards with messages like “No to Olunloyo Poly” and “Reconsider Your Decision,” the students converged at the school’s main entrance, blocking the gates and preventing access to the campus.

The protest soon extended beyond the campus as the students barricaded the busy Sango–Eleyele Road, causing severe traffic congestion and leaving commuters stranded.

The students insist the institution’s name, which has stood for decades, should not be tampered with, citing concerns over its identity, heritage, and recognition.

Security operatives were seen monitoring the situation, while motorists and residents were left navigating the heavy gridlock caused by the demonstration.
