BREAKING: Tinubu directs AGF to ensure immediate release of 52 detained minors

By Kunle Sanni

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Attorney General of the Federation to ensure the immediate release of 52 minors detained during the #EndBadGovernance protests in Kano and Kaduna on August 3, 2024.

The announcement was made Monday by Minister of Information Idris Muhammad during a briefing at the State House.

“The president has stated that, regardless of the circumstances, the minors should be released immediately and without prejudice,” Muhammad said. He also noted that President Tinubu has instructed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to ensure the welfare of the minors and facilitate their smooth reunion with their families.

Tinubu also ordered the establishment of an administrative committee to review the circumstances surrounding the minors’ arrests and treatment. Muhammad emphasized that law enforcement agents involved in the detentions would be investigated, and disciplinary action would follow if any infractions are discovered.

Background

On Friday, authorities brought several protesters—many of whom were reportedly minors—before a Federal High Court in Abuja. During the proceedings, four children collapsed and had to be removed from the courtroom.

The court subsequently granted N10 million bail to 72 defendants while removing the names of the four ailing children from the charge list. All other defendants pleaded not guilty.

The detentions have sparked nationwide debate, with human rights advocates urging authorities to prioritize the welfare of the children and ensure their rights are fully respected in any legal proceedings.

Minister of Women’s Affairs Sulaiman-Ibrahim, who visited the detained minors on Saturday, assured the nation of her commitment to their well-being and a fair judicial process.
