Brighton knock Manchester United out of FA Cup

Manchester United’s turbulent season worsened on Sunday as they were knocked out of the FA Cup following a 2–1 home defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford.

Still without a permanent manager, the Red Devils fell behind in the first half when Brajan Gruda struck after Brighton capitalised on United’s defensive frailties. The visitors extended their lead after the interval through former United forward Danny Welbeck, who punished his old club with a clinical finish.

Benjamin Sesko pulled one back late on for United, but the goal proved no more than a consolation as the hosts exited the competition in the third round. Matters were compounded in the closing moments when teenage substitute Shea Lacey was sent off after receiving a second booking.

The loss sparked angry reactions from supporters, with loud jeers ringing around the stadium at full-time as United’s poor run of form continued. Caretaker coach Darren Fletcher has been unable to steady the side since the surprise dismissal of Ruben Amorim earlier in the week.

United are expected to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season, with former bosses Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick among those linked to the role. However, the ongoing unrest at Old Trafford has raised questions about the appeal of the job.

Brighton’s victory also continued their recent dominance away to United, marking their fourth win in five visits. For United, the defeat means elimination from both domestic cup competitions at the earliest stage for the first time since the 1981–82 season.

The Red Devils now face an increasingly daunting fixture list, with matches against Manchester City and league leaders Arsenal looming, as pressure mounts during another disappointing campaign.
