Buhari hails Tobi Amusan’s World Record feat, Brume’s silver medal

President Muhammadu Buhari has hailed Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan after she broke the World Record in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2022 World Championships in the US on Monday morning.

Amusan ran a time of 12.12s to win her semi-final, breaking Kendra Harrison’s 12.20s World Record in the process, winning a $100,000 prize money.

She went on to run faster to claim the gold medal in a time of 12.06s, but which was wind aided and therefore not a legal World Record time.

In a Twitter post, Buhari said Amusan’s feat brought excitement to Nigerians and having the national anthem sung at global stage made the country proud.

“I join millions of Nigerians in celebrating Tobi Amusan and her stellar performance, at the World Athletics Championships 2022. Her new World Record and Gold Medal have brought excitement and joy and hope to all of us, and made our national anthem resonate on a global stage,” he said.

The president also praised long jumper, Ese Brume for her own achievement after leaping a distance of 7.02m to win the silver medal in the women’s long jump event.

“I also commend and celebrate Ese Brume for her long jump Silver Medal. #TeamNigeria have represented us with honour & pride; displaying courage, integrity and good sportsmanship, and proving that with hard work & determination, success is achievable. #WorldAthleticsChampionships,” the President tweeted.

Amusan didn’t only become the first Nigerian to break a World Record, she is also the first Nigerian to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships.
