Buhari understood leadership as stewardship – Ali Pate
By Kunle Sanni –
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, has described the late former President Muhammadu Buhari as a leader who viewed power as a tool for stewardship, not personal gain, urging Nigerians to draw lessons from his disciplined and principled life.
Speaking at a Special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session held in Abuja on Thursday in honour of the late leader, Pate praised Buhari’s deep respect for institutions, the rule of law, and his unassuming lifestyle. He said the former president’s tenure was marked by service, humility, and integrity.
“Buhari understood leadership as stewardship,” Pate said. “He consistently respected institutions and due process, maintaining stability throughout his tenure. When his time in office ended, he quietly returned to Daura to live among his people and tend his farm—just like Cincinnatus of old.”
The minister highlighted Buhari’s authenticity and unwavering consistency, citing his frugality, honesty, and self-discipline as the hallmarks of his leadership.
“He didn’t pretend to be who he was not. He was loyal to Nigerians—both high and low. He lived a decent life, detached from material things, and carried the consciousness of life’s ephemerality,” he said.
Reflecting on Buhari’s legacy, Pate dismissed attempts by critics to downplay the former president’s achievements, maintaining that history would recognize him as one of Nigeria’s most principled leaders.
“There’s a vocal minority trying to diminish his place, but President Buhari’s name will remain indelible in Nigeria’s history,” he added. “He was not perfect—no man is—but his incorruptible standard will endure.”
