CAA commends Nigeria for hosting African Junior Championships in Abeokuta

The President of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, has expressed appreciation to the Nigerian government for stepping in to host the 3rd edition of the African U-18/U-20 Championships in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Malboum gave the commendation during the CAA Council meeting held on Sunday in Abeokuta, ahead of the championship scheduled for July 16–20, 2025.
He noted that Nigeria, being the continent’s largest economy and a sporting powerhouse, was the natural choice after Algeria withdrew from hosting the tournament due to unforeseen circumstances.
“I wish to express my deepest gratitude to the highest authorities of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, particularly to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for authorising the organisation of our championships here,” Malboum said.
The CAA President also acknowledged the efforts of Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, for providing world-class facilities to support the smooth conduct of the championship.
He further thanked the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko; the Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade; the President of the Local Organising Committee; and Tonobok Okowa, President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, for their commitment to delivering a successful event.
Malboum added that the championship offers a great opportunity for Africa’s emerging athletes and sports leaders to experience Nigeria’s hosting capabilities, particularly in Ogun State.
He stressed CAA’s continued commitment to sustaining the African Junior Championships as a means to curb the migration of promising African athletes to developed nations.
