CAF explains reasons for postponing 2026 WAFCON

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has explained the reasons behind the postponement of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), originally scheduled to be held in Morocco.
CAF confirmed on Thursday that the tournament, initially planned for March, has now been moved to July–August 2026.
According to the African football governing body, the decision followed consultations with key partners, including FIFA and other stakeholders involved in organising the competition.
CAF explained that adjusting the calendar was necessary to ensure the smooth organisation and overall success of the women’s championship.
“After discussions between CAF and its partners, FIFA and other stakeholders, CAF has decided to reschedule WAFCON to ensure the success of this important women’s competition, in light of certain unforeseen circumstances,” the body said in a statement.
The 2026 WAFCON will see Africa’s top women’s national teams compete for continental glory, with defending champions Nigeria expected to be among the favourites for the title.
